About Shingwedzi rest camp
The Shingwedzi rest camp is situated in a remote northern area of Kruger National Park that is excellent for game driving and is considerably less busy than the south of the park.
Particular game drive highlights include the S50 (one of our favourite roads in the entire park), the Babalala Loop and the Red Rocks Road, all of which offer varied wildlife viewing across a range of ecozones and habitats. Predators (particularly leopard and spotted hyena), herbivores and an abundance of birds of prey are all found in this wonderful section of Kruger. This is also the heart of elephant country, with some of the biggest ‘tuskers’ ever recorded in Kruger coming from this area of the park.
The camp itself has a good number of bungalows and a reasonable size camping ground, plus a large restaurant overlooking the mighty Shingwedzi River (or riverbed during dry season) that attracts significant amounts of wildlife. A particular highlight is to start and finish every day with a quick run across the Shingwedzi low causeway river crossing.
There is also a large shop, self-service laundromat and a swimming pool that can be found at the north-western corner of the camping ground.

Types of accommodation
Shingwedzi hosts a range of accommodation options, with a decent-sized campground and a good number of huts and bungalows. The huts are older and lower cost, while the more recently constructed bungalows are nicer but more expensive.
Campsites
50 x tent or caravan sites, with power point and rotating braai (barbeque) grids. Communal ablutions and cooking facilities (24hr boiling water, electric hotplates and washing up facilities). Maximum of 6 persons per site.
Huts
12 x 3-bed rustic units with communal ablution facilities. There are no cooking utensils, crockery or cutlery, but a communal kitchen with scullery and electric hotplate stoves is available. A small fridge can be found on the little veranda. There is no air-conditioning.

Bungalows
14 x 2-bed units with communal kitchen. Each is equipped with a bathroom (most with showers, but some with baths), toilet and wash basin plus air-conditioning. A limited number of fully equipped utensil boxes (cutlery, crockery, glasses and frying pan) are available for hire. Contact reception upon check-in.

22 x 2-bed modern units (one room with 2 single beds). Each has an open-air kitchen with cooker top, combined fridge/freezer and is fully equipped with cutlery, crockery and utensils. All units have air conditioning.

28 x 3-bed units (1 room with 3 single beds and 1 fold-down bed) with kitchens. Bungalows are equipped with toilet, a shower and wash basin. All bungalows have air-conditioning.

2 x double bed units equipped with en-suite bathroom containing shower, toilet and wash basin. Each has an open-air kitchen with cooker top, microwave, combined fridge/freezer and are fully equipped with cutlery, crockery and utensils. Both bungalows have air-conditioning.

Cottage
1 x 4-bed unit, (1 room with double bed and 1 with 2 single beds), fully equipped with 2 bathrooms (1 en-suite), kitchen and air-conditioning. The open-air kitchen has a cooker plate, dining room/lounge and outside braai facility, fridge/freezer combination, sink, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. The cottage is also equipped with a microwave oven.

Rentmeester Guest House
This is a large luxury unit in a prime position with a riverside view. It is well equipped with a kitchen (with microwave oven). Limited channel DSTV television is provided. There are also communal braai (barbecue) facilities. Sleeps 8, with 3 bedrooms, (2 bedrooms with double bed, 1 bedroom with 2 single beds and a double sleeper couch in the lounge).

Shingwedzi rest camp is located in the north of Kruger National Park. The closest park entrance gate is Punda Maria Gate (72km), although the more commonly used entrance is Phalaborwa Gate (135km).
Shingwedzi is undoubtedly remote – the nearest reasonably large town with major road access is Phalaborwa (137km). The nearest airport is also at Phalaborwa (137km) although this does not have many flights. OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is 625km / 8-hours driving from Shingwedzi rest camp.
